Short answer

A business may not show on Google because the site is not indexed, there is no Google Business Profile, the pages do not match what people search for, the site is slow or hard to use on mobile, or competitors are simply stronger. Check indexing first, then your profile, then your content and reputation.

Not appearing is frustrating, and it is easy to assume Google has penalised you. In most cases it is something simpler, and you can check most of it for free.

For the next step, read our guide to choosing local SEO keywords and our checklist on why competitors rank above you on Google Maps. For help with the website itself, see our website and SEO services.

Two quick checks first

  1. Search your exact business name. If you do not appear even for your own name, you likely have an indexing or profile problem.
  2. Search for what you do plus your area, as a customer would. If you only appear for your name, you have a visibility problem rather than an indexing one.

The 9 reasons, and what to do

1. Your site is not indexed

Use Google Search Console, submit your sitemap and use the URL inspection tool to check pages are indexed. Make sure your site is not set to discourage search engines in its settings.

2. You have no Google Business Profile

Local results rely heavily on it. Follow our step-by-step setup guide.

3. Your profile is incomplete or unverified

Verify it, choose accurate categories, and fill in services, hours and photos.

4. Your pages do not match what people search for

Create a clear page for each main service, with the service and area in the title and headings, written naturally.

5. Your details are inconsistent

Make sure your name, address and phone number match across your site, profile and listings.

6. You have few or no reviews

Genuine reviews help trust and local visibility. See how to get more Google reviews.

7. Your site is slow or poor on mobile

Check speed and the mobile checklist.

8. Your site is new

New sites take time to be found and trusted. Keep publishing useful content and building genuine reviews and mentions.

9. Competitors are stronger

In competitive areas, you must be clearer, better reviewed and better known. See why competitors rank above you.

How long does it take to appear?

There is no fixed timeline. Fixing indexing problems can show results within days or weeks, while building visibility for competitive searches usually takes months. Treat it as steady improvement, and watch your Search Console and Business Profile figures, not just rankings. Use our local SEO checklist to keep going.

Frequently asked questions

Has Google penalised my website?

It is possible but uncommon for small businesses. Check Search Console for any manual action notices, and look at the simpler causes first.

Why do I appear on Maps but not in normal results?

Maps and local results use your Business Profile, while normal results depend more on your website content. Improving your site pages usually helps.

Do I need to pay to appear on Google?

No. Organic and local listings are free, though you can also pay for ads. Be wary of anyone charging to get you listed for free services.
