Domain Name and Web Hosting Explained for Small Business Owners
Your domain is your address, and hosting is the land your website sits on. Here is what each does, how to choose well and how to make sure you always stay in control of both.

A domain name is your website’s address, such as yourbusiness.co.uk. Hosting is the service that stores your website and delivers it to visitors. You need both, and you should make sure the domain is registered in your own name so you never lose control of it.
These two terms are often bundled together, which makes them confusing. Think of it like a shop: the domain is the address on the door, and hosting is the building that holds everything inside.
What a domain name is
A domain name is the address people type to reach you. You register it for a period, usually a year at a time, and renew it to keep it. Choose something short, easy to spell and say aloud, and related to your business name. A .co.uk suits UK businesses, while .com is common for wider audiences.
- Avoid hyphens and tricky spellings.
- Check the name is not already used by a similar business.
- Register variations you might need, if affordable.
- Register it in your own name or your company’s, with an email address you control.
What web hosting is
Hosting is the computer space where your website’s files live. When someone visits your domain, the host delivers the pages to their device. Good hosting is fast, reliable, secure and backed up. Poor hosting makes even a well-built website slow or unreliable.

Common types of hosting
| Type | What it is | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Many sites share one server | Small sites with modest traffic |
| Managed WordPress hosting | Hosting tuned and supported for WordPress | Businesses who want less to manage |
| VPS hosting | A larger, more isolated share of a server | Growing or more demanding sites |
| Hosted website builder | Hosting included in the builder subscription | DIY sites on a single platform |
For most small business sites, good shared or managed hosting is plenty. Pay attention to speed, security, backups and support, not just price. Learn how speed affects results in website speed for small businesses.
How to stay in control
- Own your domain. It should be registered to you, with you as the administrator.
- Keep your login details safe, and use a strong password and two-step verification.
- Turn on auto-renew, or set reminders, so you never lose your domain by accident.
- Check who manages DNS and email, since changes can take a site or email offline.
- Keep backups stored away from your website.
- Ask any provider in writing who owns the domain and hosting account, and what happens if you leave.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to buy a domain and hosting separately?
Not always. Some providers bundle them, but you can also buy them separately. The important thing is to know who owns each and how to access them.
What happens if my domain expires?
Your website and email on that domain stop working, and someone else may be able to register it. Turn on auto-renew and keep your contact details current.
Is my website secure with HTTPS?
HTTPS, shown by a padlock, encrypts the connection between visitors and your site. It is a basic requirement, and most good hosts include it.
Can I move my website to another host?
Usually yes, although it takes care to avoid downtime. Ask before you start how portable your site is.
